Location: Wabamun, AB

As part of our client’s final decommissioning of their Wabamun, Alberta plant, several areas of potential environmental contamination were identified as requiring additional remediation activities.

The contaminated areas included two historic landfill cells containing asbestos waste material, a former de-icing area with salt (chloride) contamination and an abandoned building with identified mould and asbestos within. QMLP, as one single company, was able to provide the skill and expertise required for completing the hazardous material abatement, the demolition and the soil remediation.

The scope of work included the following:

• Over the three-month duration of the project, over 12,000 m³ of asbestos and salt contaminated soil was excavated, transported and disposed of at an approved landfill facility;
• Due to the type and nature of the contamination, numerous special handling procedures were implemented to ensure the health and safety of all on-site workers, the environment as well as the general public.
