Home : Project Profiles : Coal Fired Generating Station Decommissioning
![]() Location: Mississauga, ON This project involved the abatement and demolition of a coal fired generating plant. QMLP was responsible for care and custody of the site, devising engineering plans, EPSCA agreements, removal of hazardous materials and demolition of above grade structures. QMLPs largest abatement program to date involved the erecting of scaffolding around each boiler, setting up containment for the entire boiler plant, removals using type I, II and III procedures, disposal of asbestos materials, gluing remaining vessels and a final assessment with Pinchin Environmental. The abatement work force ranged from 40-120 professionals. Other work on site included the demolition of coal conveyors and auxiliary buildings as well as the felling of 4 sisters using explosives. This engineered drop had to avoid damage to the building envelope of the plant as the abatement program was active during the drop. The resulting materials from the drop were pulverized for the back filling of the settling tank area. The remaining powerhouse (about 1,200 long, 300 wide and 200 high) was imploded in sequence using a series of 53 explosions using 726 pounds of dynamite. Scrap was sorted and shipped to local metal processing facilities. |
